Kifaru seek to halt Ndovu’s quest for Maniwa Cup double

It may feel like it just begun but the Maniwa Cup T20 Premier League (MPL) is about to draw its curtains on the second edition of the tournament this weekend.

On Sunday,  defending champions Sunshine Ndovus face off against the Kifaru Chargers in the Regular Category (Below 40s) while the former will know their opponents today when Logwin Simba play S&S Acrovent Rhinos in a rescheduled match at the Nairobi Gymkhana this afternoon, barring the weather.

S&S Acrovent Rhinos will also be gunning for a second title run, being the defending champions in the Above 40s category.

Sunshine Ndovus will be seeking the ‘Above 40’ trophy as well

The match was rescheduled after their last match was rained off with Logwin on 5/29 after 5.3 overs.

The four week long cricket festival has seen kids as young as 12 years and oldies up to 70 years old take the field as the South Indian Community paid homage to their culture on and off the field.

The Ndovus will be gunning for their opponents who beat them by 42 runs in the preliminary round last Sunday.

Kifaru find themselves in the final on the back of some stunning displays with the bat, with four of their batters in the top ten of the tournament’s batting rankings, namely,Raj Shetty, Praveen Kumar, Pramod Shetty and Lenson D’Souza.

Sunshine have been on song with the bat but will have to be extra careful against the long bowling line up that Kifaru boasts off as they seek to avenge their stinging group stage loss to the same opponent. Krishna Babu, Hiren Varaiya and Vaibhav Naresh hold the top three batting slots and are expected to play a key role for Ndovus in the final.

Kifaru’s skipper Kumar believes that the team that will take their chances will carry the day. “If you look at the two teams, we have a good batting side while Sunshine’s bowlers have been outstanding. So it will be a match that will be determined by the team that will take their chances,” Kumar said.

Kifaru Chargers know that their bowling will come in handy

Following a brilliant season in the Nairobi Provincial Cricket Association (NPCA) Super League, Babu has taken it to the next level as the top run scorer in the tournament at a strike rate of 131.43 and an average of 46.00.

He is the only Sunshine batter in the top 10 and it’s the prayer of passionate fans that he sustains his form when it matters the most.

Babu concurred with Kifaru skipper that the match will be completely different by saying: “I won’t say that because Kifaru batsmen have done well so far that it will be their day with the bat or because our bowlers have been outstanding that it will be the same script with the ball. No way, it will be a different match and I am sure the approach will be different,” said Babu.
