The Kenya Cricket Normalization Committee appointed – Selection Committee has named an 18 – man squad to face hosts – Uganda and Nigeria in upcoming limited overs’ bilateral and tri – series’ next month.
The team departs on Thursday, 2nd September to play three 50 – over matches against Uganda on 4th, 5th and 7th September in the inaugural ‘Derby Trophy.’
Nigeria joins the two teams in an ICC – sanctioned Tri series featuring 8 T20Is from 9th – 18th September.
Shem Ngoche will pick up the skipper’s armband from where he left off in 2019 in the team that has four debutants – left arm orthodox spinner Vraj Patel, wicket keeper batters Zahid Abbas and Brian Likavu as well as opening batter Steve Odhiambo.
Ngara Sports Club Patel gets a nod to represent the senior side after featuring for the U-19s and subsequently racking up the wickets in the Nairobi Provincial Cricket Association (NPCA) Super League while form three student Brian Likavu shoots to the top uncapped, after making an impressive debut in the ongoing League for Kongonis Cricket Club ‘A.’ The fourteen year old will be the youngest member of the contingent.
After missing out on a couple of tours, Eugene Maneno returns to play at the venue of his last match with the side in May 2019 while Elijah Asoyo will relish a chance at his hunting grounds after being out in the cold for a while.
Uganda will be happy to see the omission of former captains Rakep Patel and Collins Obuya from the list, with prolific top order batsman Dhiren Gondaria and paceman Sachin Bhudia also fail to make it out for personal reasons, including work and family commitments.
The three teams are preparing for the ICC sub regional Qualifiers to be played later in the year in October and November in Kigali, Rwanda and the next round of the ICC WCL Challenge League B whose timings and venue are yet to be decided.
Uganda take part in the Sub Regional Africa Qualifier Group A on 14th – 23rd October alongside Uganda, Ghana, Rwanda, Lesotho, Malawi, Swaziland and Seychelles.
The Sub Regional Africa Qualifier Group B tournament on 31st October – 8th November will involve Botswana, Cameroon, Mozambique, Saint Helena, Sierra Leone and Tanzania.
Kenya and Nigeria are automatically slotted in for the finals on 15th – 21st November by virtue of being the highest ranked teams as at 1st January 2020. The finals will also feature Group A and Group B winners and runner ups.
