Likavu soars to Maiden ton as Kongonis thrash Ngara

Kongonis Cricket Club ‘A’ bounced back from a humiliating 9 – wicket loss to Stray Lions Cricket Club ‘B’ last week to beat Ngara Sports Club ‘B’ by a whopping 180 runs in their 2021 Nairobi Provincial Cricket Association (NPCA) 50  – over Division I League  fixture played at Nairobi Club over the weekend.

Brian Likavu went big to finally cement his maiden League appearance, scoring 117 off 83 balls inclusive of 9 fours and 4 maximums. In just four innings, the fourteen – year old had recorded three half centuries with scores of 60, 72 and 63 before being dismissed for six in his fourth innings.

A form three student at Ruthimitu Mixed Secondary School, Likavu is very happy with his progress. “This is my first time in the League and I’m very pleased with my performance. I was very disappointed when I was dismissed for six after scoring three consecutive fifties but I did not give up. I kept putting in the work and I knew the ton was coming. My aim is to keep working hard and hopefully join the U-19 side,” says the soft spoken Likavu.

Kongonis were top- bat heavy, making huge partnerships that propelled them to 8/315 at the end of their first innings. Likavu made a 100 – run opening partnership with Romal Shah (34 off 74) before the latter was adjudged leg before in the 21st over. The opening batsman then teamed up with centurion Alex Gotley to add 78 runs to the second wicket before Ruchit Patel had Likavu caught at the close of the 32nd over.

Gotley went on to record a 64 – ball 77 inclusive of 9 fours and one maximum, his second half century in the three innings he has turned out for Nairobi Club this season that also included a century (116) against Ruaraka Sports Club ‘B’. Further, he added 57 runs to the third wicket alongside Tom Ojijo (17.)

Dennis Kanyavi (21) and Nirav Bhudia who remained unbeaten on 19 runs chipped in with the bat for the hosts.

Kalpesh Patel and Altaf Sheikh were the pick of the bowlers for the South C based side with 3/42 from 5 overs and 2/46 from 9 overs, respectively, despite the onslaught.

Ruchit Patel begun the run chase strong with a well-constructed 42 off 63 balls but the 40 – run opening stand was broken when Aman Patel had Jay Patel adjudged leg before in the 10th over.

The only other meaningful partnership was 32 for the third wicket between Ruchit and Kalpesh Patel (18). Milind Patel added 18 runs off 17 balls in the middle while Jitesh Patel added 14 at the bottom to help the visitors to 135 runs, not nearly enough to challenge the red hot Kongonis.

Kelvin Nganga scalped 3/29 off 9 overs to star with the ball for Kongonis as Alex Gotley slotted in a mean 2/8 from 5 overs. Festus Agesa (2/22) and Aman Patel (2/37) collected the rest of the wickets to fold Ngara in 42.4 overs and pick Kongonis’ third win of the season.
